The Ponoka Aquaplex will be closed for annual maintenance and facility improvements starting on Monday, August 28 and will reopen for regular operations on Tuesday, October 3.

Work planned at the Ponoka Aquaplex during the scheduled closure will include:

  • Upgrades to the multipurpose room. This space will be updated with freshly painted walls, new flooring, windows, furniture and a new audio/visual system;
  • Renovation of the bathrooms located beside the multipurpose room to be used by individuals accessing the tennis/pickleball courts and multipurpose room users;
  • Installation of a new fire monitoring system;
  • Draining, scrubbing and deep cleaning of the main pool, deep tank, hot tub, wading pool and sauna;
  • Deep cleaning of the changerooms and washrooms, including floors, walls and lockers;
  • Scrubbing and power washing the pool deck
  • Painting throughout the facility as needed

The Ponoka Aquaplex facility improvements are part of a multi-year modernization plan, which began in 2020. Since then, the Town of Ponoka has spent more than $900,000 on Aquaplex improvements. Over the past few years, the Aquaplex has seen a:

  • Completely refurbished and resurfaced hot tub, pool deck and wading pool;
  • Installation of a new 10-foot slide;
  • Four new five-rung ladders in the deep tank;
  • Two new HVAC units;
  • New diving platform and handrails;
  • Chemical system upgrades.

“This modernization of the Aquaplex this year will better serve users and community groups who use the multipurpose space for gatherings, birthday parties and other functions. Future upgrades to the Aquaplex will depend on future consideration and budget approval by Town Council,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town of Ponoka.

“The annual Aquaplex improvements are part of the Town’s proactive maintenance program to help ensure the smooth operation of the facility throughout the year, as well as providing optimal service levels and a greatly enhanced user experience for our swimmers,” said Jones.

He noted that September is a slow time at the Aquaplex with many people away on holidays in late August and over the Labour Day weekend.

“As well, we have no school lessons and typically very few public lessons in September which is why we have scheduled the work at this time,” added Jones.
