At the start of this spring, COVID-19 was in it's initial stages. Almost all of the parks and playgrounds were closed to the public. It was uncertain what would open, and what would remain closed. Even golf courses at that time didn't know if they would be allowed to have the public enjoy their greens.

I needed to get out and do some exercise. I was feeling so trapped in my home everyday, so my family and I decided to start playing disc golf.

If you have never played the sport before, it's actually quite similar to regular golf:

  • Most courses have 9 or 18 holes
  • You count your shots
  • Each hole has a PAR
  • There are different kinds of discs including drivers, discs for the fairway, floating discs for water hazards, and even putting discs
  • It is possible to lose your disc on a hole with a water hazard (yes, I can tell you first hand that this happens)
  • You may be prone to "colourful" language when you mess up a shot

The biggest differences to regular golf are:

  • On most courses there is no need to set a tee-time (you just walk up and play)
  • Of course you are using discs instead of clubs and golf balls
  • There are no carts (according to my Fitbit, I was walking almost 7 to 8 thousand steps per round)
  • You can get into the sport for under 30 dollars if you buy a set of 3 discs

The disc golf course in Sylvan Lake has 18 holes and gets great reviews from the disc golf community

Almost in the basket
A disc for longer shots

As soon as the snow melts, I highly recommend this great game that is a whole lot of fun!!!
