FRIDAY:

An inter-generational dance will be held this evening at the Sylvan Lake Family and Community Centre.

The first-ever "Snowflake Ball" is happening from 6 to 8 p.m. and looks to bridge the gap between youth and seniors in a fun way.

The event is sponsored in part by the Federal government's New Horizons for Seniors grant.

The event is an all-ages, family-friendly gathering that will be free to attend and even feature a candy bar.

SATURDAY:

Also this weekend, The Sylvan Lake Library is hosting two Kids CanCode programs tomorrow where kids can get their hands on incredible technology and have some fun with robotics.

Thanks to a partnership with Red Deer College and the SL Library, two free programs will be brought to the community:

The first runs from 10 a.m to 11:30, where kids can explore Mars by programming and driving the Mars Rover.

The second event runs that afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. where kids can learn about the use of artificial intelligence and real-world applications.

The programs are for kids in grades 6 to 8, and registration is required, but the events are free.

To register, people can call the library at 403-887-2130 or email sylvan.library@prl.ab.ca.

SUNDAY:

From 1:30pm to 3:00pm on January 26th, families in Central Alberta can celebrate literacy in a way they might not expect: playing giant board games at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

“Games, like books, promote concentration and stimulate imagination and creativity,” says Andrea Newland, Library Director at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

The event is a celebration of Family Literacy Day, which falls on Monday, January 27th. According to Life Literacy Canada, Family Literacy Day spreads the message that it is important for families to read together and spend time together doing other activities that promote literacy.

“It has been proven that children who see their parents reading or families who read with their children, will grow to become life-long readers,” says Newland.

At Life Size Games and Stories, playing Checkers, Four-In-A-Row, or Snakes and Ladders is a full-body experience, and giant storybooks show families the big picture.

Registration is required for this event. To register, people can call the library at 403-887-2130 or email sylvan.library@prl.ab.ca.
