As we get set to honour the men and women who have served our country tomorrow, a local veteran will be thinking of one man who inspired him to enlist and who continues to inspire him to volunteer and support the legion.

John Mellon enlisted in 1951 at the age of 21 in hopes of going to Korea and he served in the Army Service Corps for 18 months as a driving instructor.

Mellon says he enlisted because of his Father "he was in World War 1, he was wounded when they took Vimy Ridge, he was one of the Canadians that was wounded, he was wounded so bad they left him for dead, and it happened to be a couple of corpsmen happened to see him move and then they picked him up and brought him in, otherwise he would have probably died on the battlefield.  Every time I think of the 11th of November, I think of my Dad".

Mellon says it's because of his Father that he still volunteers with the local legion branch, serving on this year's poppy campaign.

Mellon encourages you to wear a poppy and attend tomorrow's Remembrance Day Service at the Lacombe Memorial Centre, it starts at 10:45 am.
