Red Polytechnic has announced their athletes of the week and Lacombe resident, Jared St. Thomas is one them. Sofia Quinteros of Edmonton is the female athlete of the week.

Jared St. Thomas

After a very successful season and two tough games this past week for the Kings, goalkeeper Jared St. Thomas is named the Kings Player of the Week. In the regular season, St. Thomas started 10 games and had a 4-1-4 record. He finished his second-year with a .690 save percentage and a 1.89 goals-against average. Head Coach Admir Sarcevic said he is one of the best goalkeepers in the ACAC this year.

“He is a solid goalkeeper. He has proven to us this year when he was making big saves to keep the Kings in it that he is a top-class goalkeeper.”

At the ACAC Championships, St. Thomas was awarded an All-Conference honour as the top goalkeeper in the South Division. The keeper from Lacombe and the Kings ended their season with a loss against the Keyano College Huskies on Friday morning in the championships. But all-in-all it was a great overall season for the team and St. Thomas.

Sofia Quinteros

As more of a defensive asset, Sofia Quinteros is someone that you will not see too much of on the scoresheet but her presence on the pitch was key to the success in the regular season and the championships for the Queens. Which is why she is named the Queens Player of the Week. She finished the regular season with five goals and seven assists. As Quinteros entered the ACAC Championships in Raymond, she was on a five-game point streak (3G, 6A). Head Coach Mazhiar Peyrow said Sofia is a huge asset to the program, specifically in the defensive midfielder role.

“Sofia just brings composure and awareness to the game. She is probably one of the smartest players for soccer sense on our squad. Lastly, Sofia has a great form of leadership as she is one of our captains on the team this year.”

Quinteros would cap off her ACAC season with not only a gold medal at conference championships, but she was also named the Most Outstanding Player at the championships in Raymond. In the gold medal match, she was awarded the player of the game for her presence in the midfield and her 110% effort on the pitch.
