A Red Deer man has been charged following a fatal collision that happened just after 5:00 am Tuesday.

Red Deer RCMP received a report of a head on collision on Highway 2a between Township Road 391 and 272. Upon arrival, the driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles, a Ford Focus, was deceased. The deceased has been identified as a 74-year-old Lacombe resident.

The two occupants of the other vehicle, a Lincoln MKZ, were located nearby. Both were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle they were inside had been reported stolen during a car jacking on March 7, 2024, in Red Deer. Additionally, RCMP located a loaded SKS rifle in the ditch which had been discarded by the driver after the collision.

Although early into the investigation, Initial evidence indicates that the deceased was driving the Focus Southbound when they crossed over the center line into Northbound traffic striking the MKZ head on. These are early reports and are subject to change.

RCMP have charged the driver of the Lincoln MKZ Red Deer resident Tyler Tyrone Palmantier (44), with:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5000
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Weapons offences (x3)

Palmantier has been taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody with his next appearance set for March 13, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

The passenger of the Lincoln MKZ was released without charges.

The investigation into this incident is continuing and charges may be updated.
