The Lacombe Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is hoping to help out families in need get school supplies for their school-aged children.

“The Tools for School program is a program where children are equipped with the items that they need to go back to school, ready to learn, and ready to experience the excitement that school brings,” said Jan Pocock, Special Projects and Volunteer coordinator for the Lacombe FCSS.

The FCSS receives school supply lists straight from the schools so they are able to ensure each child gets exactly what they need. Those who qualify are residents of the City or County of Lacombe who meet the income qualifications.

With the lifted restrictions in place, Pocock says families are really starting to look forward to coming school year.

“There's definitely more excitement heading into this school year. Last year, there was definitely that feeling of unease. We didn't know if we're going back regular or halftime or what that was going to look like.  This year, I can definitely say that there's excitement that kids are feeling about going back into the schools,” added Pocock.

This year, the Lacombe FCSS will also allow students to pick out their own backpack and a new pair of shoes. With that in mind, Pocock is hoping parents in need sign up for the program as soon as possible to gauge what will be needed for local families.

“I really want families to apply soon. The sooner that families apply, then we can get those backpacks ready so that the kids can come in and choose the backpack that they want, and that we can make sure that they get the correct supplies. Now, with this program we also tandem a shoes program so we make sure that kids go back with a pair of good quality, well-fitting school shoes so we really want families to apply right now,” explained Pocock.

Last year, 116 local students made use of the program and the Lacombe FCSS looks forward to meeting the need this year.
