This weekend will be the perfect weekend to break out the fishing gear and cast a line with the little ones. The 17th Annual Kids Can Catch Day will be happening this Saturday, June 4th at the Len Thompson Pond in Lacombe.

“We're going to have the fish that the kids can put into the pond. We try and get them with fishing rods and get them out there fishing,” said Bernie Street, Fishing Chair for the Lacombe Fish and Game Association.

Fishing rods will be available to borrow but the association encourages those who have their own gear to bring it out for the day.

If you don’t know anything about fishing, there is nothing to worry about. Street says a few skilled anglers will be on scene to give out some pointers.

“We usually just run over with each of the kids what they have to do so that they and their moms who get involved know what's going on. Then, they're on their own and they can come back for help at any time,” explained Street.

Kids will be given a fishing lure that they use at the pond and keep. Street says it may be smart to bring some worms for bait to use.

Last year, Kids Can Catch was held over the fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic but this year he’s looking forward to seeing a crowd at the pond once again this late spring.

Additionally, there will be a free barbeque for the anglers to grab a bite to eat. The event will run from 10:00AM to 2:00PM but the fish will be released at 11:00AM.
