Habitat for Humanity Red Deer will be hosting two Family Information Sessions for a future Ponoka build project on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, and Thursday, September 21, 2023.

Karen Vavrek, The Chief Executive Officer for Habitat for Humanity, Red Deer, says this is the first time a build has been done in that community.

" A little while back I had some conversations with the Town of Ponoka, about a possible piece of land that they wanted to donate to Habitat for a potential future build. That is the reason for the information sessions."

The purpose of these sessions is to provide information to families on our affordable homeownership program, eligibility requirements and how to apply. The first session will be held in person on September 12, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Hudson’s Green Nature and Activity Centre (6210 61 Street Ponka).

The second session will be held online via Zoom, on September 21, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Both sessions are open to the general public.

When asked about how families get involved with Habitat for Humanity, Vavrek explains.

"The way our program works is, it's very much a partnership between us and the families that are selected for the program. Families have to meet certain criteria to be eligible to apply for a Habitat home. One of the main criteria is they have to be low income and they have to demonstrate that they are in poor housing need."

Another aspect of getting a Habitat home is the volunteer portion of it, done by the families.

"Each family has to do partnership hours... everyone does 500 volunteer hours which could be on the build site, volunteering in our Restore or volunteering at another local charity."

All those who apply to the Affordable Homeownership Program must attend one of these Information Sessions. Please register for the session you would like to attend by contacting our Family Services Manager, Aspen Boone-Windrim at Aspen.BooneWindrim@HabitatRedDeer.ca or 403-309- 6080 ext. 104.
