The creativity of central Albertans is being put to the task as a naming 'election' for the new Sylvan Lake baseball team begins.

The latest planned expansion for the Western Canada Baseball League franchise is set to come to Sylvan in the next few years, and locals have a chance to help bring the legacy to life.

Aqil Samuel, General Manager for the team and President for Baseball Operations for the Sylvan Lake expansion of the franchise, said they want something original, long-lasting and unique.

"We want something that's going to be cool today, but it's also cool 25 years from now, right," said Samuel. "We want something that will stand the test of time, and we want something original."

People can go online and submit names they think would be fun and takes in some of the spirit of the area.

Any names currently in place for local teams will not be replicated, including the Lakers, Mariners and Wranglers.

"We have some pretty big plans here to get this name and logo out, and to get the team and the stadium built up. The name is an important piece to that."

"We want something that's going to be original that people will be proud of here in central Alberta for years to come," Samuel said.

From the submissions given now until the end of the month, five finalist suggestions will be chosen. From there, residents are able to step out into local Sylvan Lake businesses to cast their votes in February. The list of available businesses to vote at will be available as the information is finalized towards the end of the month.

A winning team name and subsequent logos are expected to be released mid-March.

"Our vision statement is to be the hub of baseball in central Alberta," Samuel went on. "This really is going to be an area team based out of Sylvan Lake."
