Lacombe Generals Sean Robertson is excited about his transition from player to head coach, after taking over for Curtis Austring in the upcoming season.

Robertson has been an important piece to the Generals success since joining the team in 2007, and said he’s ready to embrace the new role.

“I don’t want to over coach I just want to sort of direct traffic. These guys have been playing hockey for a long time and they don’t need somebody harping on them every day.”

“They just need someone to direct traffic and steer the ship a little bit and let them know when they are doing things right and also when they are doing things wrong.”

Robertson said it’s been tough not having a full roster throughout the preseason, but still believes in the group he has.

“It’s been challenging. I mean even when I was playing, September and October are tough to get guys out so it’s hard to plan a practice when you don’t know how many guys you have.”

“I’m encouraged by the practices we have had and when we start getting more numbers out we can start working on some things and start sorting some things out.”

He may not be a player anymore, but Robertson said there’s still a lot to enjoy by coming to the rink.

“It’s been good. I look forward to game days, they’re a lot of fun and our practices. Just being around these guys is a lot of fun.”

Robertson still has about a week and a half to get familiar with the team as head coach, as they get ready for opening night on Oct 14 in Stony Plain.
