Lacombe Generals are asking for your help.

Generals solidified a berth in this year’s Allan Cup, but because of financial reasons the team may not to be able make the trip out to Bouctouche, New Brunswick.

The team has set up a GoFundMe page, to help pay the costs of travel.

Their goal is $10,000 and in just under a day, the team has already raised $1,200.

“Usually your playoff gates usually build you a bit of a pot that you can say if you win this thing we are going to have $20,000 or $30,000 in the bank that can handle most of the costs,” said General’s GM Jeff McInnis.

“This year wasn’t the case. We didn’t have enough playoff gates and the sweep of Fort Saskatchewan didn’t help. We had three in the final round, but it just didn’t add up to enough. If we had a game seven we might have been okay."

With travel costs more expensive than they’ve ever been plus the cost of hotels and meals, the total expense is roughly $80,000.

“I don’t know how else to do this other than to get on our knees and say is there anybody out there that has a little love for us that could help a little bit.”

“Whether it’s the $15 or $20 that you would have spent on the night you would have come to Game 7 or anything. If there’s anybody who has any love for us on the other side of the fence we would so greatly accept.”

McInnis admits the thought of creating a GoFundMe page wasn’t exactly appealing, but says the options right now are slim.

“When you’re a beggar, you can’t be a chooser. Most of our players are new at their jobs with young families; they don’t have the where with all to do anything beyond taking the week off.”

“It’s uncomfortable, awkward and tough, but we’re hoping to get a little help.”

Generals are in a unique situation because they have been so successful, making it to the Allan Cup 10 out the last 11 years.

McInnis said covering the expense of attending the Allan Cup year after year keeps them in the hole heading into each new season and it’s finally caught up to them.

“Financially the best thing you could do is maybe take a year off from that, but we’re not interested in that. We’re very happy we’ve won again, but we’re in a tough spot.”

McInnis is unsure what will happen if they can’t raise enough funds, but said there’s a strong possibility they could forfeit.

For everybody who has already helped out and for those who choose to help, McInnis said the entire team is extremely grateful.

Generals first scheduled game is set for April 11 against the host team.
