What's the best Valentine's Day gift you've given or received?  Conversely, what’s the worst?

I managed to pull off both the high and the low in the span of a year.

Wanting to impress my sweetheart at the time on our first Valentine’s Day together, I shot for the moon. I procured two tickets to the Juno Awards in Edmonton. Those were presented to her in the arms of a cute Valentine themed stuffed gorilla. Those were accompanied by an oversized novelty Valentine’s card. And to top it off, I also purchased a box of 32 smaller cards and filled out every single one of them with different messages on each one.

Impressed?

Not so fast.

Fast forward one year. My sweetheart and I were now living together, engaged and due to be married in three months. I had several plans in motion but most fell through at the last minute with zero time to recover. Because my best laid plans were laid to waste, that year’s Valentine’s gift ended up being a garage door opener.

And not even a full garage door opening system. It was only a universal remote to replace the old one that no longer worked.

How the mighty have fallen indeed.

And yes, the wedding still went ahead as planned.

Do you have any stories of trials and triumphs of Valentine’s Days past?
