Drivers in South Red Deer should expect delays in traffic as there will be a road closure on 19th street between 40th and 50th avenue.

This stretch of busy road, which runs in front of Westerner Park,  will be undergoing road rehabilitation starting today and running until around October 5th.

The 19 Street Improvement Project will improve safety, mobility and capacity on one of Red Deer’s major arterial roadways.

This project is big, and will take place over the 2023 and 2024 construction seasons.

Signs are up to mark the construction zone and the detour ramps will be constructed on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. Drivers can expect the median lanes to be closed as the detour is built.

On Wednesday, May 17, the eastbound (south) lanes of traffic will be closed, and traffic will be detoured to the westbound (north) lanes. To keep traffic flowing during construction and avoid long delays, the intersections of 49 Avenue, 46 Avenue and Sharpe Avenue will become right-in and right-out only meaning no left turns can happen at these intersections. Drivers should expect delays and plan their routes accordingly.

As construction progresses towards 40 Avenue, the lane closures will extend to Irwin Avenue and that intersection will also become right-turn only.
