Cycle for Central Alberta happening in memory of Heather Lawrence

The Red Deer Regional Health Foundation will host Cycle for Central Alberta in April in memorial of Heather Lawrence who passed away in a fatal hit and run in July of 2022. She was cycling along the outskirts of Gasoline Alley at the time of the incident.  

Cycle for Central Alberta was originally started by Jason Ezeard in 2020. Ezeard set out to do a 24-hour bike ride to raise funds for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation. Since then, the event has grown bigger each year. 

This year, the event will be fundraising for Pediatric Rehab Services in Red Deer. Not only was Heather Lawrence an avid cyclist and athlete but she was also a Pediatric Physiotherapist who provided care for children from newborns to teenagers. 

Pediatric Rehab Services helps children in a variety of ways by helping them take part in activities, set therapy goals, develop skills, and recover from health conditions.  

People can participate on their own or as a group and by riding, walking, and running at home or on neighbourhood roads.. A Ride Hub at the Golden Circle in Red Deer will be open to approximately 30 registered participants so riders can ride together. At this location riders can bring their stationary bikes, laptops, tablets and other personal items. A medical team will also be on site.  

Manon Therriault, cycling enthusiast and Chief Executive Officer at the Foundation, said, “You can set an endurance goal or keep things laid back while you focus on the fundraising. Last year’s challenge was to ride for 12 hours, which riders could complete solo or share among team members. We wanted to make the event even more accessible this year, so we’re encouraging people to create their own goal.”
