Blackfalds Days is not happening this year but there are a few activities being held this weekend in lieu of town’s celebration.

On Friday, June 18th,  the town will be celebrating local volunteers with a public drive-in movie at All-Star Park. Gates open for that event at 9:15 PM with the movie beginning at 10:15 PM. There is room for 200 vehicles.

“We were unable to do like a volunteer celebration like we would typically do in the community hall with dinner and all sorts of wonderful stuff. It is a movie that was chosen by community volunteers, so we did a poll and our volunteers are the ones that chose the movie. They do have a special coupon to get a treat from a food truck that the general public will not have,” said Sue Bornn, Blackfalds Family and Community Support Services Manager.

On Saturday June 19th, the town will be hosting a fireworks show at All-Star Park beginning around 10:30 PM around dusk. People will be able to get out of their vehicles and enjoy the show but town is hoping that those attending respect social distancing rules.

Although many restrictions have lifted, Bornn says it would not have been possible to put on the same Blackfalds Days residents are used to.

“We sort of pulled the plug on Blackfalds Days a long time ago because typically our planning starts in February and booking all of the different things and setting up parades and doing those sort of things take a lot of time.  We did lay off our events programmer at the beginning of COVID and we have not yet brought someone back on,” said Bornn.

However, throughout the summer, there is plenty of other fun activities Blackfalds residents can look forward to this year with the Summer Culture Series and Canada Day activities beginning in July.

“We've got the Blackfalds Zoo on July 8th. That one is probably our biggest for attendance. This group comes and they bring a bunch of exotic animals and there's meet and greets. It is super fun,” added Bornn.
