There is still time for runners to take part in one of Lacombe’s most popular athletic events, the Bill Nielsen Trail Run. The event is happening this Saturday (October 1st) in Lacombe. Runners have the opportunity to partake in a 16km, 10km, 5km, 2km, and 2km family race all in support of the Lacombe Athletic Park Association’s running track expansion.

The Bill Nielsen Trail run was started nine years ago to honour Bill Nielsen who created many of the trails in Lacombe and passed away of pancreatic cancer after completing 100 marathons in his lifetime.

“Bill Nielson was a great figure in the running community. He built trails that Lacombe is enjoying. I know a lot of people visit our community because of the trails system. We are just grateful for the trails and his legacy and we're trying to keep it going,” said Diane Hayduk, Bill Nielsen Trail Run Race Director.

She says Bill Nielsen’s trails are some of the longest trails in central Alberta. In total, 22 kilometers of trails go in and around some of the City’s most beautiful natural areas.

During his lifetime, Bill also had a special interest in building a running track in Lacombe as well.

“He really wanted a track at our MEGlobal field. He was one of the original people who tried to put it in the plans and now MEGlobal is looking to put in a world class track,” said Hayduk.

This will also be the first run that is happening in a normal capacity since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Hayduk expects several of Bill’s family members and friends to take part in the race as well as several others who enjoy the local trails.

“It's going to be a great turn out, a great family reunion,” she added.

The online application deadline will be happening tonight (September 28th) at midnight but people are still welcome to register on Saturday morning before the races begins at 10 AM at the MEGlobal Athletic Park. Runners will receive a race bib, chip and a t-shirt for solo distances. Registration ranges from $55 to $20 with the proceeds going towards the 400-meter running track that will be going around the football field at the MEGlobal Athletic Park.
