The Government of Alberta is working to improve surgical wait times in Calgary. Starting this month, Canadian Surgery Solutions will be offering more than 3,000 additional hip and knee replacements under a new contract with Alberta Health Services (AHS).

“Those surgeries are in addition to surgeries done in hospital. This contract will increase total Orthopedic surgeries in Calgary by 21 per cent. At the same time, we’re adding operating rooms in hospitals with 133 million dollars in Budget 2022.Here in Calgary we’re adding 11 new operating rooms at Foothills hospital to be open in 2025,” said Health Minister, Jason Copping.

He added that new operating rooms are being constructed in Edmonton, Edson, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Rocky Mountain House as well.

AHS also plans to expand surgery capacity in the Central zone. AHS has issued a request for proposal for chartered surgical facilities, seeking 1,350 surgeries in the Central Zone ranging from hip and knee to general surgeries.
