A Sylvan Lake area farmer recently named the Pulse Promoter of the Year says it's a tremendous honour for a once in a lifetime opportunity she was given.

As we mark Global Pulse Day today, we tip our hat to the work of Allison Ammeter, who's currently serving her 5th year on the Board of the Alberta Pulse Growers, and who chaired the Canadian Committee for the 2016 International Year of the Pulses.

That committee tackled a lot over the year including working with Agriculture in the classroom Canada according to Ammeter “developed lesson plans, teaching children about how versatile pulses are, how they are grown, what their history is, what their nutrition is, why people are growing them, the sustainability message. Those lesson plans have been used in provinces across Canada; it’s just a great way of educating the future”.

Ammeter says a lot of work was done to educate consumers too “partnered with Community Food Centres Canada on a food security program with showing people who are either nutritionally or financially not getting the best food they should, how to economically eat for less and still eat extremely nutritionally and still get a great variety.”

Ammeter and her husband have been growing pulses on their farm for the last 15-20 years.

She's currently serving her 5th year on the Board of Directors with the Alberta Pulse Growers.
