Back in June a local family were honored with the official recognition of 100 years farming the same plot of land.

The Jaffray family, who's farm is located west of Bentley, were given a plaque recognizing their 100 year farm status, presented by District 9 Councillor Keith Stephenson.

Carol Jaffray, along with her husband Lawrence, their son and daughter in law, all live and work on the farm, which was founded by Lawrence's father farm back in 1917. Carol explains what brought her father in law to Canada from across the pond.

“He came from Scotland. Most of his brothers and sisters came over at various times. He didn’t homestead this land, he homesteaded a different quarter and bought this later, so we just went with when he came here, to our current farm.”

Carol says being recognized means a lot to her family, especially her husband who has worked the same land since he can remember.

“It means a lot to my husband, the recognition that he’s only the second generation farmer here. Just his father and him started, and now our son and daughter in law are working on the farm…they live on the farm.”

The Jaffray's grow barely, canola, and hay, as well as owning about a 100 head of cattle between them.

Four other families in the area have hit the 100 year milestone in the past couple years.

The Hanson family, who also owns land in the Bentley area, on land that is now the Lakeview Campground of the Aspen Beach Provincial Park at Gull Lake, celebrated their centennial back in 2011, and is still owned by family members Grace and Tony Tharou.

The Gustavson family celebrated their centennial back in 2012. Elsie and Gerry Gustavson are still on the farm, which was started by Gerry’s grandfather Charles, and following by Gerry’s father Gilbert.

The Laitila family was honored back in 2015, and the Sherrer family received their farm family sign in August of 2016.
