New numbers released last week show canola's total annual impact on the Alberta economy has risen to 7.1 billion dollars, a record amount.

The latest report was based on data from 3 crop years between 2012 and 2015.

The Canola Council says the canola value chain generates a substantial amount of revenue and investment and the benefits are felt throughout Alberta's economy.

Canola accounts for more than 72 thousand Alberta jobs, including employment on the farm, in related industries and other sectors resulting in about 3 and half billion dollars in wages.

In Total, canola's contribution to the Canadian economy as a whole, now surpasses 26.7 billion dollars a year, more than triple the impact of the industry a decade ago.
