A couple from East-Central Alberta were honoured as the Alberta/North West Territories 2019 Outstanding Young Farmers.

Dallas Vert and Natasha Pospisil from Kirriemuir own and operate an 11,000 acre grain farm, an independent ag retail outlet and a general store with their two young children and one on the way.

The winners were announced at the Alberta regional event held in Red Deer on Friday, February 8.

Vert says it was an honour to win the competition after being nominated by a farmer in their area last year.

"Natasha and I don't think of us as being different than anybody else," Vert says. "It really makes you dig deep and look at yourself and your own operation when you're preparing for all this by getting all the information together. It fine tunes things about yourself that you over look."

There were eight nominations for the award, and Vert says they made it through two cuts narrowing the competition down to four couples.

"It was a great competition with a very wide array of farming operations, from an organic vegetable operation, to beef and a butcher shop, and another farmer was retail as well."

The couple is looking forward to competing in the Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers for 2019 national event in New Brunswick coming up in December.
